OCCUPATION: Student
AU BACKGROUND:
Unbeknownst to Jake himself, he is actually the product of bioengineering and is one of several lab created clones. The project was a forray into a blossoming field called Ectobiology where in not only are genetics spliced and duplicated but tampered with on a temporal level. Jake is actually a weird genetic combination of people from the past, as are all the others.
Now, by now the question is obvious. Why? Well, that's where the seedier part of this whole debacle plays in. With access to time and successful cloning, there is little standing in the way of some faction or another using it for the sake of warfare. Make those clones mutants and you have a recipe for global disaster. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the major project heading this development was Weapon X-- A particularly tenacious organization that's entire modus operandi is the cloning and experimentation of mutants and other unique beings for the sake of warfare and weaponry.
Luckily there were a few kind-minded scientists and workers involved in the project that objected to taking things that far. See, Weapon X may have funded and oversaw the project, but the lab itself was small and once independently run (called Skaianet). A few of them gathered what they could of the already cloned children and made off with them and what they could of the data needed to continue the project.
The scientists then split themselves and the children up, to better their chances of staying free and under the radar. One kindly, older lady took possession of Jake and a girl and ran for the island country of Seychelles.
Unfortunately the girl became lost during a terrible storm, while sailing out to the very island that would be their home. Thought to have perished, the elder woman and Jake continued on, set up a home, and lived in peace on one of the outer islands of Seychelles.
This is Jake's early history. All of which he has fleeting if any memory of. As far as he's concerned, he's always lived on that island and anything telling him otherwise is just made-up day dream fantasies.
Not that island life had been bad to him. Sure he lost his beloved grandma when he was six to an adventurous expedition to a neighboring island, but if anything Jake was a kid who could bounce back and make due on his own. His grandma had taught him plenty about survival and it ensured that he didn't go and get himself killed after the first week of being on his own.
He was lucky that the house his grandmother built was large and well cared for. The basement was stuffed to the brim with emergency rations and fire arms all but littered the place as much as her eclectic inventions. Because of this, Jake barely had a reason to leave his home.
He had food, shelter, weapons, and of course the most important: Internet.
So on the internet, Jake spent most of his days. From downloading movies to chatting up on forums, he had a mostly happy and uneventful childhood. It was on such forums that he actually met one of his best friends, Dirk Strider, who then introduced him to his other two most precious friends, Jane and Roxy. The four of them were a set and never missed a chance to talk to each other. Despite them all being miles and miles apart, they were as close as could be.
Of course, it was surprising when Dirk came to him one day and confessed that he was a mutant. The notion really made him think. Despite Jake's home country being one of the nations the most open about being anti-mutant, he himself had never harbored such sentiments. Especially knowing that he was pretty damn sure his grandma was a mutant herself. He told Dirk as much and it seemed to have lifted a great weight from his shoulders. Jake was just glad that his friend was now happy and honest around him!
Three years later he would understand everything Dirk and gone through with the manifestation of his own x-gene. Only unlike Dirks telepathic based ability, Jake's was entirely physical. He spent the entire afternoon cooped up in his bathroom while a pair of obtrusive wings sprouted from his back.
Revealing them to Dirk lead to the conversation that had them investigating Genosha. See, the boys had a very similar, if bizarre situation. They were both isolated in their environment. Jake, had the jungle, while Dirk was stranded on an abandoned navy warship in the middle of the ocean.
Jake was of the opinion that they ought to relocate. Luckily Dirk's powers allowed him to leave his body as an astral projection in order to snoop where snooping was necessary.
Meanwhile, Jake confessed his secret to their other close friends in hopes of gathering them all together. If Dirk could bring good news, then they could all relocate and live happily in supposed peace! Among the people he contacted was a girl name Jade who, strangely enough, had talked to him often through his dreams. Another mutant who he knew from across the ocean. Knowing that she was in a similar predicament to he and dirk, he also extended the invitation to have them come find her if Genosha was a go.
Finally, just as they were in the clear, and Jake was making to pack up his life to permanently leave his little island, he stumbles into the room of his late grandmother. The room was untouched for years. Jake had always felt it wrong to go in there. It was her room after all, even if she wasn't around anymore. But given how he might not see it again, he gave into the temptation and wandered in.
It was there he found evidence that there was someone else he needed to collect for this hilarious search and rescue mission. A girl, from the photo he found, just about his age. The picture of the two of them was taken when they were very small, and thinking back, the girl had rung familiar. He thought maybe she'd been an imaginary friend. But no, she was real and judging by the familiarity, she appeared to be a sister.
Her name was Nepeta and she was found on a neighboring island near his, and the two of them set off to Genosha, hoping to start a new life with all of his friends.
PERSONALITY: Jake's about the definition of quirky. Which, to be honest, is expected when you've lived alone on an island you're whole life with little outside contact save for the internet and your dead grandma. Jake's the sort of kid that when he realized he had no one to play with, he made due with an over active imagination and delusions of grandeur. What we have is an awkward nerd with a heart of gold and a penchant for adventure who never actually leaves his room much.
Jake loves every movie. All of them. He has never found a movie that he has disliked. Which is a lot of movies, by the way. You can't even see the walls of his room anymore because they are so covered in posters. His favorite movies, however, seem to be thrilling and dangerous action movies, which is likely where he got his utter infatuation with adventuring and tomb raiding. Unsurprisingly he has a fondness for FISTICUFFS and wrestling and anything really involving getting rough and dirty.
The only problem with that would, of course, be the fact that he's the only one on his island. And despite how well he's lived on his own this whole time, its pretty obvious that he's a bit lonely. The only outside contact he gets are his best friends that he talks to over the internet, and the locals when he makes occasional visits to the main island. Before that he only had his eccentric grandmother that died when he was still really young. So his friends? Are dear as dickens to him.
He's also a little bit overly trusting and gullible. While this is sometimes a very good thing. (Since he's always unconditionally believed his friends when they have asked him to and thus also acts as a very supportive shoulder.) It's also something that will likely get him in over his head. In canon Dirk pointed this out to Jane saying he needed to be less receiving of everything that's told to him or else he's going to get in major trouble one day.
It's also something to note that one of the reasons he is so ready to believe in everything said to him, is that by believing, it's already become slightly less fake by that principle alone. Jake is clearly a very optimistic individual.
But he is not without his own temper. If he's aggravated enough he will explode. It doesn't usually last for long, but this kid can go into a near Karkat level of wing winded rant wherein he causes a scene and typically embarrasses himself and anyone else around him. He can also be very stubborn and reckless. He doesn't always think before he shoots. It's also reasonable to say that he's not terribly socially adept given his background and probably comes off awkward around others. His old fashion vernacular and excitability certainly doesn't do him any favors in this regard. And the funny thing? Being around people is such a foreign concept to him that its likely he'll suffer some mild kind of social anxiety for it. He just has no idea how to react aside from what Hollywood's taught him. As such, a lot of the way he reacts is likely overblown or dramatic as he doesn't have much concept of social cues.
Regardless, Jake's a good kid. Even before he was aware of his own mutant status, Jake was receptive and open minded about Dirk confessing to him, despite the questionable influence of his home country, being that Seychelles was openly anti-mutant. But Jake couldn't have cared less about all that. His friends were his friends to him.
APPEARANCE: Superficially, Jake is kind of dorky looking. He has an outdated swooping hairstyle, thick-rimmed square glasses and cargo shorts that are about two inches too short with a very slight, yet noticeable overbite. He kind of looks like he leaped from the 1910's and made some hap-hazard attempt at dressing himself modernly and then failed. (Which is I guess kind of how it happened.)
Though, even with all that in mind, Jake is tall (5'7''-5'8'') with an athletic build and a noticeable tan topped off with the biggest, brightest green eyes you'll ever see.
Mutation wise, he sports a pair of feathery wings, tinged slightly yellow. They're smaller in comparison to most wings and only reach slightly past his butt when they are folded properly at his back. They just barely fit under his coat when he's trying to conceal them.
POWERS: Jake's mutation takes the form of a pair of short but strong wings. They don't grant him full flight, but he's able to use them to boost a number of things such as running speed and jumping height. He's also able to use them to soften his descent speed from a high vantage point and he can use them to glide and hover for a short time.
Because he has wings he also possesses an avian physiology to support them. His bones are mostly hollow to make gliding and hovering easier, and he carries very little body fat as well as suffers from a very quick metabolism. The boy can eat.
He also possess a latent regenerative healing factor at some point though probably not until some time after game start.
